Get to know our Language and Communications Manager, Susannah Barba, in Part 3 of Wetzel Team Unplugged!
What literally gets me out of bed in the morning is a little voice calling, “Mommy mommy mommy mommy mommy! Hold you!” I don’t mind; I would rather snuggle Sofia than hit a snooze button!
The rest of my daily routine varies. Two or three mornings a week, Sofia (who will turn 2 in May) either stays home with my husband, Daniel, or goes to a Mom’s Day Out program at a local church. On those days, I go to the Wetzel office to do administrative work — matching language and intercultural training teachers with students, planning classes, gathering feedback, and helping hire new teachers. On the days I don’t go to the office, I keep up with my work inbox from home during Sofia’s naptime or after her 7 p.m. bedtime.
In addition to managing Wetzel’s language and intercultural offerings and communicating with our 25-30 teachers, I teach a few private English lessons and group classes myself. My favorite class is American Conversations, which meets weekly at different cafes around town to build vocabulary, fluency and friendships.
Outside of work, my days fill with outings to the Children’s Museum, Greenville Zoo, libraries, parks, and the YMCA, where I take body combat and cardio/strength classes. On Sundays, I attend Emmanuel Bible Church in Mauldin. Toddler mom life doesn’t allow much time for sitting still, but I manage to read and discuss at least one book a month thanks to my eclectic book club, whose recent selections have included Hillbilly Elegy, The Nightingale, and Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking.
My expat husband and I love to travel, especially to visit his family in Spain and to the South Carolina coast. Eating well, with Mediterranean flavors and ingredients, is at the core of our family life, and you’ll never find our kitchen lacking in lemons, tomatoes, garlic, saffron, and olive oil. One of Sofia’s favorite activities is climbing on a stepladder to watch her Papa cut veggies, which he always lets her smell and taste as he prepares her meals.
Because I taught English in China for three years before I got married, I also have an enduring interest in the Chinese culture and language. Someday, I hope to visit China along with Daniel and Sofia.
